Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light greyish mixed. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 1228 was the debris filling pit 1229.
Our foreman, at a depth of c.5 m, came down upon a southern stretch of wall 746. The wall appears to divide two distinct earlier soils. One to the east that is darker and ashy, and one to the west that is brown and silty/sandy. We realized that this in fact marked the bottom of the pit, and that we were coming down on earlier levels. We suspect that this large pit--1229-- was initially cut to deposit debris in during the Middle Byzantine period. However, at a depth of .5m, the digger came down uppon wall 746. Deterred by this, as It cut across the center of pit 1229, then cut pit 1211 just a bit to the east. 1229 and 1228 should therefore be contemporary with 1214, 1200, and 1211.
Update 18-6-13:
Cut 1229, filled by deposit 1228, postdated pit 1245. Deposit 1228, which contained a large sample of pottery, produced not a single Frankish ceramic. As this pit was far from the southern scarp, there was no chance of contamination. Pit 1229 and its associated deposit (1228) had to postdate pit 1245, and as deposit 1228 dated to the Late Byzantine Period (1/2 12th c.), pit 1245 on strategraphic grounds should be no later than this.
