Stratum:   large pieces of tile and brick, pottery, stone and plaster architectural fragments and flooring
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish black. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is fine sand.
Notes:   We opened this as our final context of the season because it became clear that this little strip was full of debris consistent with fill in a robbing trench. Therefore, it likely postdates most of what we have been digging, although the composition is quite similar. As in the large dump fills (e.g. 1210, 1227), we got a lot of brick and tile. However, we also removed large pieces of brick flooring and other architectural pieces like we found in context 1202. Many of the bricks are mixed in limey plaster, with no clear edges of the lime preserved; the largest of these lime chunks are over 0.20 m long and 0.10 m wide. One particularly large piece of pan tile was 0.30 m long and 0.20 m wide; others are mostly under 0.20 m. Two very large pieces of brick floor were pulled out from the east end of the deposit (the larger 0.70 x 0.30 m); these pieces are bricks set in a lime matrix and covered with plaster like the one from 1202. We took them up to Pietri.
The more Thanasis excavated, the more it seemed that this large architectural dump continues under the large stones to the east and to the south (large cut blocks between context 1242 and this context), as well as further to the west. This seems less like a robbing trench and more like an intentional deposition of large debris over a broad, general area. We had to end it arbitrarily due to the end of the day and the end of the season.
