Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level down to the The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   B 172 is a patch of reddish soil to the north of the clay exposed by baskets 165 and 167. We are not entirely certain how far north this layer extends but Bill is following it well. This layer almost certainly sat on top of the clay layer I just mentioned. We are removing this layer because it sits on top of the clay layer exposed by B165 and B 167. In order to dig that area, this red soil must be removed first. It has started raining, bringing the excavation to a stop for the day mid-basket.
Work continued on 29 of May and followed the reddish soil to the removed martyr of B170 and to the edge of the 1961 excavations. A soft lense appeared below the SE. Most of the soil was dark and hard like what covers the area to the W except here. This will be dug separately in another basket and seems to be part of a E-W robbing trench.
