Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 233 extends over the entire southern area of the excavation area. This includes the area under context 232 (pebble layer) on the east side as well as the yet undug area on the west. We decide that the previously noted area of lighter soil is simply a spot where the soil is drier, and included this also in context 233. The soil is full of large cobbles and tile fragments throughout. At the very eastern edge, along the scarp, more of the north-south wall is uncovered. We note at this time, that although the north-south wall seems to join the east-west wall at the north to form a corner, the construction of the walls seems somewhat different, the east-west wall uses larger stones throughout and the especially along the exterior faces of the wall. The north-south wall forms a corner also at the southern end, forming a small jog in the wall. At this point, where the wall turns east, it seems to align with the foundation trench for a wall removed in the 2007 excavations. This foundation trench was Basket 67.
As the soil is removed along the south line, it becomes clear that the soil left between Slabs 1 & 2, and between 2 & 3 (both below context 231) belongs to the same fill. The soil in these two areas is now included in and dug as context 233.
Throughout the fill of context 233, a large number (10+) of iron nails and other metal bits are found, as well as several (5-10) fragments of glass. A fragment of marble was also found.
As the soil of context 233 is removed, several new areas are exposed.
The top of a cut is now visible. This was cut to install a drain and the pipes were then covered over. The drain pipes run north-south across our excavation area. We know this because the pipes are still intact and exposed in the area being excavated to the south, and can be seen to run directly into the south scarp of our own excavation area. The drain is also visible where it reaches the north scarp and is broken off at this point. The fill in this cut will be dug as a separate context.
After sweeping, however, the cut looks semi-circular and because it follows the line of the orange grove south of the excavations, we now believe it is more likely a tree pit. Several trees were removed in the 2007 excavations that had similar pits.
In the area between concrete slabs 1 & 2, two different layers have been revealed, one at a higher elevation. The higher layer appears to extend to the southern edge of the excavation area and is cut by the tree pit. This layer appears to be an exterior surface tha tis slightly more compact and has inclusions lying level with the surface.
The rest of the area below context 233 seems to be similar to that exposed previously between concrete slabs 3 & 4 (below context 231) and may be a single context.
