Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the WThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Billy began removing the furrowed layer at (263 E 1006 N). We recognized that this context covered most of the Nezi field area, so we decided to begin to excavate it in 4ths to make the removal more manageable and in control. [Later note: this context was removed ultimately with 8 baskets, though it was evident that each was removing the same context]. On the morning of the 20th, Kris and I decided to leave the orange clay feature intact and dig around it until we understand better what it is, and James was in agreement. Immediately to the north of the emerging black and the orange clay (B26), the workmen started uncovering a dense layer of rooftiles. Two pieces of incised stone pieces (James sugested that perhaps they are Byzantine) were found among the tiles and are perhaps related to a similar piece of stone revetment which appears at the southern end of the southern extension of the excavation area. I have circled the locations of these worked pieces on the sketch for B23.
