Stratum:   pebbles, cobbles, pottery, nails, a few boulders. 40% inclusions.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Excavation began in what was a complicated set of strata, bounded on the N by the depressed area of compacted soil at 1011.75 and on the S and E by the small pile of stones in robbing trench B54. On the W the area is bounded by the remnants of the excavation scarp. Excavation revealed a yellowish clay over the rocks on the S, which may be part of the robbing activity of B54. More rocks were revealed as part of the pile that was visible to the W of the excavation. These were probably not the remnants of a wall but of the robbing activity from B54. Perhaps the stones were piled here or discarded. Excavation stopped when Panos confirmed hitting a newer blacker soil that goes under the yellow clay.
Later Notes, 3/4/09: The yellow clay that was revealed in this layer was mixed with a black clay. This mixed yellow clay layer goes N toward the newly revealed stones. We are not sure how to account for the introduction of this clay into this area. Context 437 (cleaning) is above context 439 and below bulldozing operations that took place in 2008. Bulldozing revealed a layer that was equal to a number of different contexts like 411 (see also final top plan of 2008). Later excavation revealed that the soil to the N in context 440 was the same as that of 439. The N limits of this context were determined by the depression of compacted soil at about 1011.75 but it turns out that the soil was the same on both sides.
