Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the S. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Deposit 494 is the second fill from the top of the pit cut 493. It is characterized by the inclusions which seem to be building materials, white clay, boulders ranging from 0.2-0.45m in length, roof tile fragments and cobbles. As these materials are contained within the cut, whose line is readily distinguished, it appears that the boulders and building debris were dumped in the pit. It has been noted that the diameter of the cut is appropriate for a well, so it is possible that the pit fill 494 is intended to fill the well after its term of use.
The blocks removed are irregular, though several are of dressed limestone. With the removal of the deposit, gradually a circular course of stones lining the cut became visible indicating perhaps a built well; it is possible that the fill of the pit with the large blocks and stones represents the upper built courses of the well that have collapsed inward. Also recovered were both a marble capital that was cut down and reused as a threshold block (indicated by the cutting on the surface) and a block with a large rectangular cutting, possibly a basin or for a post fitting. Although the well continues downward below the collapse deposit and there is a hader differentiate deposit below, it is decided not to excavate the well further for reasons of time and safety.
