Stratum:   Inclusions: small to large round to subrounded pebbles, some cobbles on top (5%), some carbon chunks
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark greyish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This is the darker soil between the cut in the center (to this context's south) and the possible foundation trench to the north. The soil is very dark. Near where it meets the cuts was found a complete vessel, which we are calling Vessel 1. It is upside down and placed extremely close to W21, actually touching the wall. The neck and mouth seem to have been surrounded by stones to keep the vessel in place. It leans a little to the south.
The flotation sample was taken before we found the vessel - it is not from the soil immediately surrounding the vessel.
There is a possible second vessel, Vessel 2. We are beginning to sieve all soil. This vessel, smaller is on its side oriented W-E w/ the mouth to the west. It is NE of Vessel 1.
The mouth of a third vessel, Vessel 3, is to its west. Its mouth is at about a level elevation with the body of Vessel 2. It seems to go into a slight westward dip of the wall. We are reaching a very hard red soil w/ large white-green clay patches and large, dark burnt areas.
South of Vessel 3 and north of Vessel 1, there may be a fourth vessel, Vessel 4, on its side. Later note: this is not a complete vessel.
A fifth vessel, Vessel 5, immediately north of Vessel 3, is leaning N-NE at a 45 degree angle, its mouth towards the NNE, its base in the dip of the wall. The wall was probably cut during the deposition of these vessels.
Top points for the vessels:
1: 277.28E, 1019.38N, 85.65H
2: 277.28E, 1019.54N, 85.43H
3: 277.17E, 1019.56N, 85.45H
4: 277.18E, 1019.51N, 85.40H
5: 277.21E, 1019.71N, 85.51H
Vessel 5 = C-2008-1
Vessel 1 = C-2008-2
Vessels 3 and 4 = C-2008-3
Vessel 2 is uninventoried at this time.
At the bottom of this context, two major areas are revealed. A large, solid decayed mudbrick mass to the NE and very dark black material elsewhere with pieces of clay and concrete, the latter probably pieces of the upper floor that was broken.
Mudbrick dug as 5278.
Cementy fill as 5282 - this layer attempted to leave the ash and black material alone and just dig the cement.
The vessels sit on 5282. We removed them while doing 5282, because some of the less complete vessels seemed to extend into that context. We determined that the vessels merely sat on top of 5282 and belong to 5250, so we are cataloguing them in this context.
