Stratum:   50% fine pebbles to bolders, bone, ceramic, root, tile
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We found black and reddish-brown soil and bluish soil in the scarp of the 1961 excavation. There were small to medium pebbles. There were also several cobbles and 1-2 bolders. We also found a coin. The blue soil was clearly visible on the scarp as a thick, 10 cm layer. This layer touches the reddish layers above (5247, 5253). This layer is heavily mixed and again we are not sure how to interpret this layer.
Removal of this context brought the level down to the 1961 excavation in the courtyard. Initially, we expected the single context would be 3 distinct contexts, one of reddish brown, one blackish brown and one bluish brown. However, it quickly became apparent that these 3 soils were mixed together wth no discernable divisions that would indicate separate contexts. In particular, the bluish soil existed in patches scattered throughout contexts primarily along the eastern scarp, but also buried within the northern extremities of the context. It seems likely that this context represents some sort of debris fill on top of the pebble floor patches that became visible underneath. The variegated soil colors and the numerous inclusions of this layer re-enforce such a conclusion. In addition, this context abutts a similar, although less colorful, context full of inclusions to the north (5258). On the south, it abutts the soft soil full of tile debris and rubble (5264). In fact, the distinction between this context and 5258 to the north was based solely on the workman's impression.
