Title:   leveling fill
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5325

Date:   2008/04/22
Lot:   Lot 2008-080
Stratum:   20% cobbles: spherical angular; roof tiles, bones, pottery, a little charcoal, some plaster towards the bottom of the context
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this layer to figure out whether this is an interior or exterior space, how the w and s walls relate to the n older wall and what was the floor level associated with each. Also, if this goes down as fair as it looks, it could interact with the floor surrounding level dug by the 1960's excavation, and perhaps tell us more about the pit dug into the middle of this room. A little to the north, across the E-W partition wall, we excavated several clay floors and reddish fill similar to this reinforcing the idea this leveling fill, as does the heterogenious mix of pottery, roof tiles, stones and loose soil. Many more ceramic tiles as one advances N along this context.
What are its relationships to the sides of the central pit? On the west side, before there was a 45 degree slope, but excavating this level has turned it into a cut straight down and 1.04 m. across. Our pickman says that the walls of the pit are the same fill context and he excavates them as well. A more compact pile abutting the southern wall turned out to be roof tiles lying at random angles was left unexcavated. No evidence of a foundation trenchs. 5325 contains a variety of bone from cattle, sheep/goat, and bird. All body elements are represented.
Our digging down to the level left by the 60's excavation showed that they stopped with out finding a hard level, as their stopping point, now hard packed by time, interfaces with soft soil in our fill, in an arbitrary line almost due north at a reading of 265 E. We stopped digging here and will let next session's crew take over due to lack of time
It appears that the deposit overlies 5325 may be a continuation of 5325.
Boundaries:Diffuse boundary with layer below: comes down on a similar reddish brown layer with roof tiles and inclusions.
