Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   5364 was a large context from the top of the squarish-shaped martyr left from the 1960s excavations. We wished to see if any layers here would correspond to those we dug further to the W. This context was understandably mixed since we were dealing with a surface left exposed after the 1960s (and therefore artificially hard from weathering and foot traffic) as well as a level partially beside and partially above wall 38 ext.
We came down upon multiple different contexts more or less divided into those W of the Wall 38 ext and those on top of and N of Wall 38 ext. The decision to stop digging W of the wall was rather arbitrary - our workman thought the northern half was softer than the southern.
Those layers we came down upon in line with Wall 38 ext. divided into 3 distinct contexts. The furthest southern deposit was also E of the furthest extent of the stones of Wall 38 ext. which are on the E (the ones on the W are gone), and so should ostensibly be related to the wall since its end also seems in line with the last stone of Wall 38 ext. This layer was harder than 5364 above and whiter in color from the deposits further north.
The second deposit we found in line with Wall 38 ext. is directly north of this hard white layer and was distinguished because it was yellower in color. At the furthest northern end of the martyr in the NE corner of the yellow layer was a small deposit of soft ash. As there are numerous ashy deposits found throughout the area, it is quite possible this deposit relates somehow to the ashy layers found in the martyrs further E. (See section drawing 5378) Although the second two layers are in line with Wall 38 ext., no stones were found continuing that far N. It is unclear what relationships they have (if any) with Wall 38 ext.
The hard white layer will be dug in a separate context.
