Stratum:   10%: small to medium sized stones, some pottery and tile
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand. Structure materials: limestone. Material size: .57 x .37 x .17 (max) .12 x .10 x .05 (min). Material finish: roughly hewn. Material construction: random coursed. Material bonding: none. Features: Orthostate on S end with doorframe cuttings.
Notes:   Wall 5430 was assigned a context number because it relates to a level of ash that underlies its neighboring parallel wall to the W, Wall 5394. Our goal in excavating between these walls was to find a foundation trench for their construction, which would in turn establish a potential terminus ante quem for the construction of Wall 58 to the S. Both of these walls currently appear to abut Wall 58. As we continue in this area, we may be able to clarify the sequence of how these walls relate to each other.
The two walls 5430 and 5431 are clearly distinct walls in the pre-1960s plans (labeled Walls 77 and 78 respectively), but only one wall is seen in the 1961 plan (unlabeled) and it is unclear which wall it should be. The 1961 plan shows either 5430 or 5431 extending further N than it does now and must mean that one (but probably both) were truncated at some point after 1961 on its northern end.
Excavated for demoltion by Jess Paga on 14.4.10.
We are removing wall 5430 in order to expose the earlier wall 5431 and to ascertain the relation between wall 5431 and the two revealed contexts to the West, excavated in 2008: 5413 - the clay surface in the Southern quadrant, and the debris "surface" in the Northern quadrant (see notes for context 5413 for more details). The two surfaces revealed by the excavation of 5413 lay between NS wall 5430 and NS wall 5394.
We are tossing the blocks of wall 5430 into a pit directly to the North (to the South of the "bouleuterion" of the South Stoa). One of the blocks, constituting the SW corner of the wall, was an upright threshold block, measuring H. 0.53 x W. 0.18 x L. 0.65; the tread of the riser projected 0.15, W. 0.36 (lower step), 0.23 (upper tread). This block appears in the prelim. Photo to the East, prior to demolition.
The earlier wall, 5431, being revealed by the removal of 5430, is random-coursed with roughly hewn stones (conglomerate, field stone, 1 block of limestone, possibly worked), and with tiles in the interstices. Neither wall 5430 nor wall 5431 have any bonding agent. Wall 5431 does not bond with EW wall 5562, but abuts it. As we removed wall 5430, we uncovered a small lump of accumulation just to the SW of the corner between 5430/5431 and 5562; we will remove the lump as context 6723 before moving on to the clay surface revealed by 5413.
