Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | We excavated N of the remaining stones of Wall 5478 because the soil there appeared higher and later than the exposed white layer 5499, and because we wanted to discern if there were any traces of the white layer (5499) beneath it. We also wanted to see if we could discern the depth of the stones remaining within the foundations of the wall. Upon excavating this context, it became clear that the hard, white layer 5499 did not occur around the N edge of the remaining exposed stones. Instead, on the N and NE edge of the remaining stones, the soil is different-- darker, reddish in color. After excavation, the edge of the hard, white layer (5499) projected over the newly-exposed red layer. Also, a number of stones to the N edge were pedestalled above it. This means that this context was probably also taken out of sequence. The white layer seems, at this point, to conclusively relate to the construction of wall 5478, or to its foundations. It is found in areas that surrounded the blocks as they once lay, and appears to either overlie or cut the reddish colored exposed surface. Snce the red also undelies stones from the wall that remain, it seems possible that we will find more of it beneath th ewhite layers, making it earlier. Nevertheless, the remainder of the wall must come out before the white layer can be removed, since it is ostensibly cutting on its E side.
