Stratum:   Loose, poorly sorted sandy silt with 70% inclusions (bone, pottery, mostly boulders and cobbles)
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: limestone, tile, marble, black granite. Material size: see notes. Material finish: foundation unworked, superstructure squared. Material construction: Regular coursed. Material bonding: mud. Features: threshold, spolia.
Notes:   We are phasing this probably 13th century wall to understand how the 12th century and 13th century structures in this area relate. Based on construction technique and visible pottery in wall 5552, which 5553 bonds with, Guy Sanders hypothesizes that both walls are 13th century. This wall (5553), which is probably exposed to the bottom or near bottom, consists of foundation 1.42m (max.) high and 1-2 courses of superstructure (max.) 0.42m high. The east face of this wall is largely eroded, so most observations are based on west face. Foundation is visible from southern limit of wall to start of threshold 1.15m north (threshold is 1.05m x 0.40m x 0.22m). Under the treshold there is no foundation, only eroding mud. This shows that this part of the wall was meant to be a doorway and not to bear the weight of a wall above. To the north of the threshold, the foundation is completely concealed by dirt. The visible foundation consists of regular courses of limestone rubble and roof tile with at least one piece of marble spolia (indeterminate shape) and one piece of black granite spolia (L-shaped, 0.05m thick, legs of L are 0.14m x 0.17m, but depth is unknown because it is concealed by the wall). At least two pieces of marble revettment are reused in the foundation. Visible on east face at bottom (1.30m from south end) is a large reused limestone slab (1.02m x 0.83m x 0.18m). The rest of this wall must be exposed so that it can be removed so we can excavate the 12th century room beneath it. Sanders hypothesizes this is an interior wall.
Foundation limestone: 0.33m x 0.20m x 0.12m; Tile: 0.12m x 0.03m; superstructure limestone: 0.68m x 0.30m x 0.19m
[Amendment to record from 2008]
Revised 30.3.09 DWL: The wall was dismantled today. A fragment of a serpentine bowl was found. The threshhold block and the soil beneath it were removed, as were the uncoursed cobble foundations of the threshhold. A possible doorjam with a later stone blocking (single large slab) was revealed. Wall 5553 abutts wall 5403, suggesting that 5403 was built first. A more compact layer of soil was found beneath wall 5553. A second threshhold block was removed, just to the north of the first.
