Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The goal of this basket was to reveal the edges of the cut for the E-W robbing trench intersecting and predating robbing pit cut 5719, which was cut into the level excavated into this context (TPQ). The pickman took a shallow pass and identified the top of the cut to the S boundary of the context, but to the N, the boundary remained diffuse. He had distinguished this fill as distinct from the preceding basket 5830 on the basis of compaction. The distinctions in the edges of the cut as he finally defined it are striking. The N edge remained difficult to find throughout the basket, and when he did uncover it, it was distinctly irregular. However, he also came down upon tiles and stones from the wall, which seem like conclusive proof that this is indeed a robbing trench for the E-W wall.
We are left with the interface between the N-S wall and the E-W wall. There are many problematic elements to this interface, some of which we've solved. We know that the robbing of E-W wall 5725 occurred after both of those events. But why is the depth of the robbing trench 5791 so different from the depth of the trench S of pit cut 5719, and why doesn't it continue southward for more than ~2.0 m? To understand the difference between these two components of what may be the same trench, we have to remove the martyrs that we left to help us understand the pit cut going E-W.
