Description: | The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Floor under fill or accumulated topsoil (=deposit 5954) left by 1960s excavation; not contemporary with foundation 5552 since this is foundation, not wall itself. We are excavating a balk left as a martyr by the 1960s excavations in order to establish the chronology of foundation 5552. Part of the foundation has been removed already, but some had to be left in order to prevent the collapse of the balk, even though the foundation was built later. The floor was made of packed earth laid on leveling fill (=deposit 5959). Too little of the floor survives to permit detailed conclusions.
