Stratum:   Firm, moderately sorted, light pinkish red clayey silt with 40% inclusions (fine through coarse pebbles)
Description:   The soil color is light pinkish red. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a balk left as a martury along the south side of foundation 5552 by the 1960s excavation. Currently we are trying to establish the relationship between foundation 5552 and wall 5965, whose foundation trench (=cut 5966) cuts the martyr. Removal of a layer of soil revealed a cut that was difficult to define. In order to establish the cut, a test context (=deposit 5987) will be excavaed, but first we will excavate deposit 5974 to the N of foundation 5552 to help establish the chronological relationships fo the balks to the N and S of foundation 5552 and to the E of wall 5965, and to help establish their dates. This deposit did not yield sufficient information to draw conclusions concerning its nature or function.
