Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is well sorted.
Notes:   Deposit 602 is a tile rich deposit extending westward from wall 306 into the scarp at 255.5 E and northward from wall 376. Though they did not extend all the way into the robbing trench 596 where the north wall of the space would have stood. The deposit has been interpreted as a tile collapse rather than redeposit material because of the aspect and completeness of the tile fragments; several tiles seem to be largely complete, if not intact, and they are lying at angles that suggest fall rather than dumping. The tiles are being reserved of weighing and counting, as well as being laid out in order to look for joins in the hops of mending up complete tiles. The deposit is several layers of tile deep as much as 3 overlapping tiles. The tiles are held in a mixed matrix. There is white clay associated with wall treatment and the sealing of roofs as well as a light yellowish brown sandy silt. It is expected that the removal of the tile collapse will reveal more of the surface revealed by the excavation of the dumped lens 594. It remains to be determined what the relationship is between the tile fall 602 and the tile rich deposit in the adjacent space east of wall 306. This other tile deposit has very complete tiles at aspects reminiscent of collapse, though they are molded in the center of the room.
Individual tiles that continued westward into the scarp were broken, as they were sitting on the floor and it is not expected that we will excavate further west of the scarp at 255.5. The removal of the tile fragments revealed a dark reddish brown clay floor with patches of white clay deposited by the melting of the surface treatment of the walls.
Many of the tile fragments are substantial though only few formed a complete tile from the efforts to find joins between the fragments. In order to best capitalize on the effort made to find joining fragments, the most complete tiles have been boxed separately and they have all been numbered before being put in zembles. The total count of the tile fragments is 408 and the total weight is 183.3 k. The tiles have both pan and cover tiles represented, of various fabrics (pink, yellow, orange, red, and green). The Byzantine signature decoration is common. Many are quite friable, suggesting less than ideal firing, such that it is possible that better tiles from the rest of the house were salvaged, but in the area the lesser quality tiles were left to collapse.
