Stratum:   5% small angular and subrectangular pebbles, few ceramics, large charcoal chunks.
Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this context with a specific goal in mind: to find the actual line of the fire pit, if it exists, and to determine the relationship of this floor surface to the smoother, flatter one to the west. This context was revealed at the end of context 6398, and differed from the other contexts that were revealed by having more inclusions (including cobbles) and undulating more than the surface exposed to the west. Additionally, a thin swath of context 6408 was seen to run between the two ashy surfaces that were revealed by 6398, so we wanted to deternine if it might be covering a large swath of ashy surface, as well as a continuous southern line forming the edge of a larger hearth cut.
The result was that we could not find a clean line with the edge of cut 6414 (the fire pit). Instead, a tile-rich and cobble-rich level was revealed that appeared quite mixed up. Therefore pit 6414 and fire pit 6413 appear to be the only hearth-related structures in this area- although the other ashy patch 6406 had a distinct reddish color at its conclusion that could have affected its surrounding areas exposed at the same time.
Our working hypothesis- this was a patch for nicer floor 6411 to the west, making it later; but both 6408 and 6411 were cut by 6414, the cut for a small hearth. 6398 covered all.
