Name:   Nezi Field, context 6428
Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Fill
Title:   fill
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   6428

Date:   2009/05/15
Lot:   Lot 2009-029
Stratum:   This soil was very ashy with 10% inclusions of pottery, pebbles, bone, and large chunks of charcoal
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was revealed by the excavation of fill 6417. 6428 does not seem to be a surface but maybe it is a subsurface or leveling fill. 6428 was under part of the area left as a martyr last season by AF&CP. On the basis of elevation and composition we believe 6428 may be the same as AF&CP's 5887.
This fill is cut by the foundation trench (cut 6427)
Panos exposed a small patch of darker soil which he thinks may have been a cut for a wooden support. Excavation revealed 1) a floor and 2) 1 post hole.
Our next move is to excavate the post hole, after which we will move to a second, different area of red, soft soil just to the south of E-W wall 5519 (context 6433 filling cut 6437).
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
