Description:   The soil color is light greyish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was revealed by excavation of context 6445, a floor surace built atop a second surface, not far down. We had noticed large quantities of hard, white ash and lime in the west-facing section of pier cut 6065, but hadn't been sure about which stratum was cutting which. Eventually, it became clear that the ashy substance was filling a cut into the surface exposed after excavation of 6445.
The fill itself is light-colored, possibly ash mixed with lime, with charcoal flecks. The waste coming out of the area is not, at first glance, indicative of domestic activity, and may be reflective of industrial activity. Ultimately, the convex shape of the cut made it seem likely that the fill was waste, stored or dumped into a built pithos.
! Important:as the fill was excavated, it appeared that the topmost tiled level could collapse without direct support beneath it. Consequently, there remain some traces of a martyr that should be excavated with this fill level clinging to the south-facing section of the cut. Eventually, the martyr was removed in the same context, and the entire south-facing section of the cut was traced.
The fill eventually stopped being ashy in consistency and took on a dark golden brown color as we reached a different level of fill. Our plan is to switch baskets, as long as the cut continues downward; for the present, we can see that it will go at least into bedrock levels.
