Title:   Trodden Mavro Soil
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   646

Date:   2012/04/04
Lot:   Lot 2012-013
Stratum:   The soil had 50% ceramic sherds, cobbles that are angular and spherical, coarse and medium pebbles that are rounded and spherical, iron slag, glass, bone, nails, tile, shell, bronze, marble and millstone. Western side included a significant amount of tile
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. It is silty sand.
Notes:   4.4.2012
We investigated the trodden mavro soil in order to see how far down it goes. As the soil is cleared, it is apparent that it is the same soil as that found just beyond the northeastern corner of wall 366 which is being excavated by Sarah Miller and Rachel McCleery. A balk along the drain (426) and well (346/671) was left to avoid contamination.
Carbonized material was first observed in the southeastern corner of the context by walls 332 and 365, though patches of carbon appear to extend throughout the expanse of 646 along with animal bone and iron slag. Regular samples (2 during day one excavation of 646) are being taken to compare the microfauna/flora and general composition of the context throughout its expanse. These samples should also be compared to the sample from 641, which also contained carbon.
We are having all of the soil dry sieved because it appears to have been dumped and is yielding a wide array of material which will be helpful for determing use of the space.
After one pass over the ground level on the eastern side (elevation 86.81), Thanasis identified a seeming foundation trench along wall 332. This trench and its wall (332) are above the mavro soil. We then jumped over to the western side of well 346/671 and drain 426 in order to see if similar trenches exist under walls 365 and 306. This context has its limits in the northwestern corner of the room where the scarp in robbing trench 497 makes the division between darker and blonder soil evident (see photograph 2012 -41).
The western side of the context, although the same soil, has a higher concentration of cobble and tile. The cobbles are sub rounded and spherical. Close to cut 341 there are larger stones that may be the result of wall 365 collapsing. There may be a break in wall 365 that was later filled with stone, as at this point no smaller, round foundation stones are visible in this area (see plan). This area has been left undisturbed at this time for later exploration.
Context 645 may just be a clump of clay that was part of fill 646, but concentrated on the top layer.
5.4.2012
About 70% of the soil which Thanasis is digging up in the western half of the room is tile. Guy believes it is a secondary deposit, so we are estimating the density and not quantifying further. No deposit similar to potential foundation trench 654 is visible along walls 365 and/or 306. Excavation of this context was paused mid-morning to explore the boundary of 646 with possible foundation trench 654. At this time, the elevation was down to 86.69 on the western portion.
After investigating the possible foundation trench 654 and removing balks 660 from around well 346/671/drain 426, we continued working east of drain 426, where a softer, darker soil was preliminarily identified immediately north of well 346/671 (670) at elevation 86.77.
6.5.2012
After investigating the break in wall 365 (664), digging continued on the western portion of 646 (west of well 346), leaving a balk around well 346/671 and drain 426 (context 660), with one soil sample taken from the SE corner of the western portion of 646. Tasos and Thanos as well as Thanasis were pickmen for this area at different times this day. Context 646 appears to have been completely removed from the western portion of the room after lunch, leaving an uneven surface.
