Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   N.B. Context number 6581 was skipped in 2009. For consistency it is being used during the 2010 season.
Context 6481 appears to be the lowest fill in a well located at the southern end of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. The soil became redder compared to context 5943 and the decision was made to change contexts. Shortly after beginning this context it appeared that we reached the bottom in sterile bedrock. The suggests that when the well was dug in the Frankish period the excavators gave up before reaching the water table. This may be because they appear to have come down on a sidewalk for an E-W Roman road and/or the soil and bedrock was too difficult to excavate.
The removal of context 6481 (and 5943 before it) revealed cuts on both the east and west side of the well for what may be a robbing trench (possibly for the Roman road).
