Description:   The soil color is light brownish mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Cleaning exposed reddish soil cut by two large dark areas.
The cleaning extended from the western edge of our area to the east, overlying a number of contexts.
The context would appear to be cut by wall 420. We will attempt to confirm this during our excavation of the foundations of wall 420.
Our most excellent pickministers, Panos and Tasos Kakouros, were somewhat perplexed by the relationship between a number of areas visible on the surface but featuring somewhat difficult--their word--joinings. We therefore had a fairly shallow scrape across a large part of our southern region to find the boundaries. This was a great success, as it revealed a number of darker areas and also some redder areas. It is probably not good to rest conclusions on this layer much at all, since it is no doubt extremely contaminated by having been run straight across these areas.
For the scene at the bottom of the context, one should best consult either our top plan or photographs, but, in short, we found contexts 665 and 667, both black layers that were later excavated, lip 705, a wee nubbin of a context left orphaned by the placement of 420 right through it, and reddish layer 721, which we would return to much later. This also halted our adventures in the chaotic southern regions of our area for a time, as our attentions moved across wall 420 to the excitement in the north.
This area did not differ much at all from what was below it, as it was designed to clarify relationships without actually removing significant amounts of material.
