Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt. Structure materials: tile, plaster, stones. Material size: avg. 0.15x0.10x0.03. Material finish: n/a. Material construction: n/a. Material bonding: mud. Features: none.
Notes:   Structure 6519 is a tile built pithos found beneath wall 5725 which likely exists in both the rooms w. and nw. of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It consists of tiles likely bonded together by some kind of mortar and was plastered on the interior. Its associated fill is 6512 and the cut for the pit in which it was constructed is 6513. It is located approximately 1.5m south of pit 6115 which was also likely for a pithos, but a later one. Structure 6519 was built into a surface in which appear to have stood several dozen white ware kettles (these were found in the fills above, 6129, 6145, 6493). A similar tile-built pithos was identified in the room north of the northwest room (5505).
Additional notes: SG (12/04/10)
The southern part of pithos 6519 was revealed during the excavation of pit fill 6583 in the room west of the courtyard. Much of this pithos had been truncated by the pit. It also appears that blocks from wall 5725 tumbled into the pithos.
Later notes: DPG (12/05/10)
n 12-5-10, excavation of fill in the built pithos continued (cf. 6880). Afterwards it was determined that the fill of the pithos could not be investigated further without excavating the pithos structure itself. As excvaation proceeded, it was apparent that the pithos was built of corbelled tiles, but there was no plaster on the tiles. However, a tile fragment was found with painted plaster (greyish black, solid), but this was clearly reused.
DPG (13/05/10)
On 13 May, the floor of the pithos was revealed during the excavation of 6897; it was comrised of tiles. After its removal, revealing a levelling fill of tiles underneath, it wa decided to remove the tiling lining the pithos. As the tiles were being removed, it became apparent that a significant number of the tiles had charcoal covering the entierty of one of their wider faces. Three more fragments of tile had plaster on them (not from use in the pithos) as well as painting over the plaster in a similar color as previously noted. Two unworked pieces of marble were excavated from the tiles (0.17 and 0.18m in length), one of which also had charcoal on it.
