Description:   The context shape in plan is rectrangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is tapered point. Truncation: truncated by foundation trench cut 6427.
Notes:   We discovered the foundation trench for the western section of wall 5519 while removing soft levels of fill close to the wall, on its southern side (6578, 6582). Unexpectedly, there are are multiple additional foundation trenches with a relationship to this one; to the west, the foundation 6427 for wall 5284 truncates foundation trench cut 6616 for wall 5519. Furthermore, the foundation trench 6616 does not go the length of wall 5519; it stops in front of the foundations 6575. There, a second, lower foundation trench seems to indicate an earlier phase of the same wall. Therefore, we can imagine this wall being rebuilt, perhaps not long after it originally went in, and perhaps the intention was to accommodate the construction of a doorway to negotiate between north and south- into the courtyard space.
Ultimately, the foundation trench cut 6616 went deep, going into bedrock and revealing large stones which seem to have functioned as foundations for a substantial wall. The stones were placed in an east-west line, but did appear to project slightly beyond the face of the wall and to be crooked in their placement. All of this suggests that they were not intended to be seen, but only to stand as support.
When he reached the westernmost wall, Panos revealed dirt in the section, pedestalling wall 5284, and perhaps meaning that walls 5519 and 5411 were founded together; it appears that we have indeed reached the lowest levels there, or if we find another foundation trench for wall 5284, it will be small and not very deeply founded.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
