Context Type:   Pit
Title:   pit cut
Category:   Cut
Notebook:   1103
Context:   6645

Date:   2009/06/11
Description:   The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is gradual. The sides of the cut are convex. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is tapered blunt point. Truncation: 6645 cuts a second, larger cut to the south; 6645 cuts fill 6646 of foundation trench 6647 to the north.
Notes:   We discovered this bothros in the excavation of context 6631, cutting the fill of the earlier foundation trench 6647 (fill 6646). It postdates the construction of the corner wall and foundations 5519 and 6575 and predates the construction of foundation trench 6616 to the west.
It's cutting a pink/red hard stratum exposed by 6624; this represents the putative "stereo" stratum as defined in other parts of the site.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
