Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Context 6747 is a fill of debris and accumulation between NS walls 5394 and 5431. It is similar to fill 6739 -- pieces of the same green-glazed ww vessel have been found in both contexts. As we excavate 6747, we are finding small lenses of ashy soil and charcoal. These lenses tend to be thin, irregular, and contain no materials. They most likely represent dumps of ashy soil within the softer fill of 6747, but we are attempting to isolate them in so far as it is possible. In the middle of the area, we have come down on several medium-sized rocks, roughly oriented in a NS line. They possibly represent a wall, but we need to excavate more in order to determine their precise nature. The soft soil with inclusions continues on the West and East of the of the rocks.
As we were taking a sample of the ash deposit in the NW corner, we found that the ash continues to the South. We traced the ash for approx. 1 meter to the South and determined that the ash seems to cover a surface extending across the area between NS walls 5394 and 5431. We will continue removing the soft soil with inclusions and will trace the extent of the ash. We will then excavate the ash as a new context. The sample sent for flotation analysis will retain the current context number (6747) and also the context number for the ashy layer.
Upon excavating context 6749, in the Southern quadrant of the area, we determined that the softer soil of 6747 continues beneath it. The text of 6747, therefore, consists of the entire area between NS walls 5394 and 5431, and North of EW wall 5562 to the Northern edge of the baulk (baulk left by 1960s excavations).
As we traced the ashy deposit in the NW corner of the area, we attempted to determine its Eastern and Southern extent. The ash (with very little charcoal inclusions) directly overlies flat tiles in a few places. It possibly represents a hearth, although the relative lack of charcoal might imply industrial activity of some sort, rather than cooking. Direcly on the top of the ash to the East is a very firm compact surface. In tracing the very firm surface, we determined that it is cut on the North by a stratum with lots of rocks and tiles, on the East by a stratum that is soft with few inclusions of tile and pottery, and on the South by a stratum with medium-sized rocks and semi-compact soil, possibly part of a wall. See the sketch in the excavation notes for context 6747 for a bottom plan. As the very firm surface seems to be cut by these other strata, we will investigate them first, beginning with the stratum to the East (= 6759).
364 tiles recovered from context [unweighed].
