Context:   6814

Stratum:   1% inclusions: small pebbles, small flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate, some bone and pottery
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 6814 is an ash deposit revealed by the excavation and demolition of NS wall 5561 and by the excavation of semi-compact fill, context 6812. The ash deposit extends NS along the area West of wall 5561/6821, and East of pit 5595. We are excavating this context in order to clarify its relationship to NS wall 5561 and NS wall 6821, and its relationship to the other ash deposits in the area directly to the East (e.g. 6778, 6805, and 6719).
The soil of 6814 is almost entirely ash, brownish-grey in color, and has very few inclusions (ca. 1-5%): small pebbles, small flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate, and a few sherds of pottery. We took one bucket (ca. 4 L.) of this deposit as a sample for water flotation analysis. The ash deposit extends partially East, between NS wall 5561 and NS wall 6821 (i.e. it forms part of the soil matrix between the two walls). The ash also continues to the North, along the Western face of NS wall 6821. The boundary of the ash on the West is a thin baulk associated with pit 5595 (part of the cut for the bothros, left unexcavated in 2008).
The stratum revealed by 6814 is reddish-brown in color, semi-compact, and with ca. 5-10% inclusions, mostly of tile. The excavation of 6814 has revealed more of NS wall 6821: its Western face (against which the ash rested) and part of its top surface.
