Lot:   Lot 2012-021
Stratum:   Dark, hard soil. Rather loose once picked. Inclusions - 30% - Rocks, tiles, pottery, bone, big chunks of clay, carbon.
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   7.5.2012 We began to excavate this area in an attempt to find an end on the south side to the black fill of 769. 774 seems to be a soft black soil with many large inclusions. It is distinguished from 769 on account of these large inclusions of tile and brick, and by its relative softness once it was initially picked. At this time, it is thought that it may be the same as 769, close to the robbing trench of the e-w wall, on the south side of the context 486.
We stopped excavating briefly to take out 777, the rocky boundary of the robbing trench of wall 272. Once 777 was removed, the eastern extent of 774 was determined, and excavation continued.
As 774 was removed, the foundations of pier 573 were further exposed on the north side of the pier.
8.5.2012 Once the robbing trench that had been exposed by the removal of 272 was no longer visible, it became clear that 774 extended underneath 769 all the way to the northern balk of the trench. 769 and 774 may be part of the same fill layer, and this relationship was previously obscured by the presence of the robbing trench.
At the end of the day, near the western balk and on the northern extent of the context, 774 seemed to be coming down on a reddish fill.
9.5.2012 Wednesday morning, we continued to excavate the massive fill layer that extends over the whole northern half of the area. Certain different contexts were exposed underneath 774. We began to come down on a hard-packed, rocky, black fill that is distinguished from the soft black fill of 774 by the numerous rocks. This hard-packed fill was called 797.On the west side of the context, we've come down on a reddish fill, noted yesterday but clarified today. Another reddish layer appeared to the north side of well 495. The strip of fill to the north of robbing trench exposed by the removal of context 749 was excavated around mid morning. This thin strip continued to come down on more of the hard black fill.
In sum, while 774 extends over most of the area north of the robbing trench exposed by the removal of 749, only pockets of other fill layers have been uncovered underneath 774. These will be clearly noted on the plan, and referred to by context number if/when excavated. Although this soft black fill has not come to an end everywhere, it is thought best to call this context closed and relate later portions of the soft, black soil fill in the matrix.
