Description:   The soil color is light mixed. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context sat around the yellowish hard packed fill 842. Some of its boundaries were not very clear. For instance, we found coin 80 when still trying to define the boundaries between the pit and the black soil surrounding it. Thanasis decided to stop digging this context and to return to the yellowish fill because at this point the yellow fill seems later than the black one.
After finding the exact extent of the pit, dug as 842, we moved back to this context. The pit was actually cut into this context. This black fill extended north and it might be related to 774. It is also possible that 840 may be equal to 824 and 825.
The majority of 840 came down on a hard-packed reddish fill around the pit, a hard-packed blackish fill close to the robbing trench, and a soft black fill that seems to extend east. This soft black fill might be a continuation of 840, but will be dug tomorrow as 844.
24.5.12 The discovery of coin 2012-80 just outside the formal boundaries of 840 suggests that the beginning of 840 really was an exploration by Thanasis to find the cut of the pit (845). This coin was not relevant to the dating of the fill or the pit.
