Stratum:   light reddish brown soft sandy silt
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We begin by exploring the extent and nature of the circular depression shown just north of the center of the room in the Broneer photo of the S Stoa, Eastern section (_Corinth_ I pt. 4, plate 29, room behind his label for Room II). The soil is sandy silt and light. After a first cleaning, we expose a redder, soft depression around the edges, with greyer soil in center. After taking high and low opening elevations, we continue to excavate in this context. We hit modern material (a AA battery and large piece of sheet metal) in this fill. After several cm, we notice a change in the soil type, which becomes darker and moister, as well as more clayey, and more inclusions, including much more pottery than the upper part contained. We also found charcoal, glass, bone, and iron. We decide to sieve all soil and close the context before continuing. We take elevations at the lowest point excavated and at the approximate level of the soil change.
