Stratum:   Sandy silt but with sufficient clay content easily to form lumps when rolled in the hand
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We open this new context due to the change in soil type and inclusions noted during excavation of context 283. When begun, the top of a threshold block was visible; this is removed and photographed. The soil remains the same dark brown sandy silt with clay, and inclusions of charcoal, glass, bones, and iron. We continue to come upon pottery and begin to get bones. In addition, there is a fair amount of small stones (angular, 3/4") as well as a few larger rocks (ca. 30 cm max dimension). After some 30 cm, the soil becomes slightly harder and we close the context.
