Context:   286
Date:   2016/04/06
Lot:   Lot 2016-011
Stratum:   Very similar or identical to soil of context 285
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greenish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We change contexts from 285 because the soil began to get harder. The pit is very close to uniformly circular, with a diameter of .84-.87 m. As we continue, the soil is remaining the same dark greenish brown color with inclusions of charcoal, glass, and bone. In addition, medium-large stones occur in the fill, ranging from ca. 10 cm to the occassional ca. 30 cm. A gaming die is found in the sieve. There is a porous, light reddish material both in chunks and disintegrated in the soil, perhaps hydraulic plaster? -- one sample is kept. As we continue, the soil seems to get more clayey and perhaps moister; this context seems to have slightly more clay than 285 (perhaps contributing to its comparative hardness). Upon consultation, we clear and close this context for logistical reasons -- it will be reexcavated at a later date.
Note that in both 285 and 286, occasional tiles or pithos pieces were uncovered but not kept with the pottery.
The large architectural block in the SE corner of the room was removed during excavation of context 286.
