We open the context, which appears on the surface to cover most of the unexcavated portion of the western half of the rooms. The matrix is full of small stones of varying sizes ranging from gravel to a few measuring c.10 cm. The soil is quite loose. This context overlays the more consolidated soil visible in the NE corner of the room (320). This context contains a higher concentration of pottery and also a small amount of pebbly modern material (glass bottle fragments). The consolidated material below is possibly a floor surface and we therefore begin to sieve all material. There is also a small amount of bone in the matrix.
This deposit continutes to overlie the consolidated soil (320 and 346) as we move south across the room. In the northwest corner of the room this consolidate material either dives or disappears. For the moment, we do not excavate this area in favor of following this potential surface across the rest of the room. Moving south, there is a higher concentration of modern material (glass, can frags, button). There are also a higher number of small roots running through this area of the room. Near the south wall, 287 overlays both the black and the red soil deposits exposed during the excavation of context 284. The black deposit (297, 298) slopes upwards towards the east and south and continutes across the room. Deposit 287 ends on the eastern side of the room at the westernmost small scarp line is.
In the northwest corner of the room, the deposit is quite shallow (c.5cm) and covers a different matrix than in the rest of the room--rocky and reddish. This new matrix (310) cuts into the consolidated surface (320) uncovered further east and in turn is cut into by the black soil in the area excavated as 284.
Based on the finds and matrix, context 287 is more or less the same as 284--modern material + baza over the ancient material.
