Notes:   31-06-16:
8.02: After the initial record of the deposit yesterday excavation starts the 31st of May. The area to the W has clearer boundaries so it will be the first one to be excavated, alongside the string that marks the section and from SE to NW. Due to the fragility of the shells of snails I will apply techniques of burial archaeology.
After the first pass the edge of the pit was better defined. It was decided to save all buckets for watersieving, just in the event the deposit is not very deep. I picked up as charcoal a sample I still do not know what it is, but that looks sort of slag or burnt soil. While identified it is kept as a charcoal to avoid any contamination. A fresh root was cut to continue excavation. Finally, after discussing with the field director and due to the time constrains it was decided to move to excavation with a trowel.
10.05: After working on the area of the section I decided to shif to NE abd excavate from the front I created towards the apparent end of the deposit. The reason for this is to avoid going very deep on the deposit at any specific spot. This work has clarified the edge of the cuts and the bottom of the pass still presents the same soil and inclusions, indicating the deposit goes further below.
After 5 minutes and due to the density of the finds I decided to move back to wooden tools, or it would have been impossible to remove the snails safely. They look slightly more trampled in this area, although this could well be the result of the previous excavation of the area, since the breaks look fresh. However, the larger proportion of breaks must still be related to the formation processes of the deposit.
13.21: The removal of the layer of snails revealed the same rocky surface than in the first pass, matching as well the area to the NE which I wondered at first if it was part of the deposit. Although the stones of this layer imbricate with the snails and the characteristics of the soil are the same, after discussion with Sanders and due to the fact that the snails as inclusions were the defining characteristic of this deposit, it was decided to close this deposit and open a new context (564). If 558 and 564 can be equated only further excavation will reveal. I bucket of soil (16 l.) from context, saved for flotation.
