Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this is the rocky portion of the third lens mentioned in the notes for 557. we took measurements and photos on 30/5 and plan to being excavation first thing 31/5.
after that were looking at the depression left by the excavation of 557 and realized that the rocky fill into which bothros 548 is cut appears to have been laid against 557, so that the excavation of 557 left a thin strip of rocky soil around the southern edge of the bothros (see plan for this context). This rocky fill seems to continue downward in the scarp of broneer's sounding, perhaps filling a cut. Either way, it appears now to be stratigraphically later than 557 (and 559?). We will consult panos tomorrow.
Removal of 559 made it clear thatour suspicion about 557 was correct: it indeed abuts and runs underneath 559. we will excavate it later as a distinct context and equate the two later.
We consulted panos about 557 and the rocky strip: he is not certain, but thinks that 557 is laid against the strip, the reverse of what we thought.
