Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   77 has looser soil than 69.
This context was opened to excavate the soil fill within the possible foundation trench on the south side of the E-W wall in shop VI. The soil is moderately compacted - it is easily removed with a pick - and is similar in composition to the soil unearthed at the lowest levels of context 37 - the fill of the robbing trench of the north-south wall. The soil is bounded by a cut into the bedrock to the south and the east-west wall to the north. The soil appears light reddish brown in patches, most likely due to the bedrock it is bounded by a martyr was left along the eastern edge to protect the robbing trench of the Roman n-s wall. In excavating the western swath of the context, bedrock was discovered approcimately 10cm below the surface of this context. The bedrock extends 32 cm north, leaning on 8cm gap from the E-W foundation blocks and continues to the eastern boundary. However, the 31cm closest to the western boundary exposed a cut in the bedrock running N-S. This cut is approximately 30 cm away from the western boundary and 58 cm from the extant blocks of the N-S wall. It appears to extend in those 31 cm into the surface of the SE quadrant. Because of Roman pottery, including a Roman type 27 lamp, has been discovered in the excavation of this context, it may be a continuation of the Roman era robbing trench excavated in earlier contexts. The actual foundation trench may be the 8cm gap between E-W foundation blocks and a cut into bedrock. Further pottery anlysis will clarify this question. This context will be closed to excavate the surface within the SE quadrant.
