Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 125
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Context Type:   Cut
Title:   Cut of grave at S, E of Wall 58 (Grave 2014-02)
Notebook:   1108
Context:   125
Date:   2014/04/18
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are concave. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is tapered blunt point. Truncation: Truncated in center and W by later graves 1995-2 (center) and 1996-5 (W)..
Notes:   Context 125 is the cut of Grave 2014-02. Context 71 is the fill of the grave and Context 72 is the skeleton.
The original top of the cut is only preserved at the E. Here, a pedestal of soil was left by the earlier excavations in which we were able to detect the top of the cut in a choppy surface layer that may represent either the packing or a leveling fill of a floor in Unit II, Room 6 (see Context 90). Elsewhere the top of the cut had been removed by later burial activity, including Grave 1995-2 particularly (at the center of this cut), and Grave 1996-5 (at the W). In these areas only about 10cm of the depth of the cut had been preserved.
The cut was only large enough to accommodate the burial with very little space around it, though it was about 25cm deep at its deepest point. In general it dipped slightly at the center.
Later Notes (29/4/14):
After a close reading of NB 864 p. 118, we believe that Grave 2014-02 is cut into their unexcavated Floor 7, reached after the excavation of their B62. We suspect we reached the equivalent level beneath our Context 90, though this is also unexcavated. This grave was sealed by Floor 6 above, dated by the excavators to the mid-13th c.
The fill is dated by pottery to the Late 13th-early 14th c. See notes for Context 71.
