Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   22-4-14: Thansis has cleaned the surface in the NE corner of our area to better define the cut visible after the removal of context 105. The N extent was a little unclear from the surface was a little unclear from the surface, so he came down with a small pick c. 5-10cm, at which point he was ablet o clearly define the N boundary. We have another oblong cut, probably a grave. From this upper layer of fill we found one coin in the sieve (2014-49), and all pottery and bone is being collected. We will sieve 100%. The cur surface is very easily visible in the scarp, and a thin whitish layer is visible c. 2m below the top of the cut. Thanasis came down on the top of a skull which is at the N end of the cut. As he came down further in this area (near the skull), he began to reveal a second skull at the extreme N boundary of the cut, along with some disarticulated (?) bones. He also found a large iron nail. Further work at the N end of the cut has also revealed tile coming out of the scarp with old breaks. It seems clear that context 129 cut into and truncated an earlier grave at this N end. A second coin has been foun in the sieve (2014-53). As Thansis continued to clear the fill above the skeleton, he found a coin in situ (2014-54). A large fragment of glass was found in the sieve from this level as well. Another coin (2014-57) was also found in situ. A soil sample was taken.
23-4-14: Thansis exposed the entire skeleton, which was drawn, measured, and partially removed. The more fragile skull and vertebrae need to be removed by the conservator. Several bones (including a rib and a mandible) were found associated with but not belonging to skeleton 136, and were collected separately from the other bone inclusions in fill 129.
25-4-14: Conservator removed the fragile skull and vertebrae. The rest of the fill was removed and the boundaries of cut 137 were determined by scraping with a triangle trowel until a soil change to a more clayey composition was detected. All ceramics and bones from the fill were collected. The context was measured, photographed, and closed. The uniformity of this fill and clear definition of cut 137 suggest that this deposit filled grave 2014-06 in a single event, except for the truncating grave to the N which may have contributed to the presence of th bones near the skull of skeleton 136 and were therefore collected separately from the other disarticulated bones in the fill.
