Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NE. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After closing context 1 as modern backfill, we moved on to the next known modern deposit, the fill around a modern water pipe. The pipe lies in a SW to NE orientation and will for now mark the northern boundary of our excavations. After the fill is removed, the area will be photoraphed and a separate cut sheet provided. Among the ceramic fragments in the bucket I saw what looked like guttae and pulled out a small stone piece that may be an architectural fragment. The west end of the trench narrows and is much more plagued by roots from the stump on the north bank. The pipe is still uncovered to the east of 12, as far as the walls of Unit 2. there is a valve above ground about 5m NE and a spigot c. 20m west of 12. The extension of the pipe in either direction is unknown.
