Notebook:   1108
Context:   196

Stratum:   Inclusions of stones, tiles, pottery, and bone (approximately 15%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We moved to excavate an area approximately 1 m squared to the E of context 31 whose surface appeared similar to that of context 195. We decided to dig in this area to further understand the pit of context 31 and the extent of the hard packed, light earth exposed after the removal of context 195.
A carbonized olive pit was found in the early removal of this context; a bucket of soil was sent for water flotation. The color and composition of the soil is similar to that of context 195. There was also a small portion of very dark soil in this context, but most of the earth was soft and dark. It covered a harder packed earth beneath. The line of softer soil seemed to slope to the NW and curve around context 31. It is possible that this pocket of soft earth with the harder packed soil is due to tree root disturbance. We removed a large tree root in this context. Little pottery, bone, glass and iron was found.
This deposit now appears to be one of a series of dumped fills in the area N of room G, unit 2. It is very similar to the fill removed in context 195, a layer in a sequence of fills belonging to an exterior space in this phase.
