Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   256
Date:   2014/05/12
Lot:   Lot 2014-033
Stratum:   Inclusions of stones (cobbles sub-rounded), bone/shell, pottery, and some tiles (approximately 10%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   After having defined the cut of the pit on all sides (context 255) we begin to remove the clayey earth fill of the pit. Beginning with the larger clay lump on the E side of the pit at N1076.89 E106.41 H85.88 we continue to remove this fill with small picks movinng to the N and W. As we remove the clayey earth from the entire circumference of the pit a very dark and very soft soil is revealed underneath. We close this context when the dark, soft soil is exposed throughout the pit and when a patch of particularly ashy soil is revealed.
Two marble chips and two stones with worked surfaces were found. One worked stone appears to be architectural and measures 0.201 by 0.134 by 0.119 m. The other worked stone, measuring 0.230 by 0.057 by 0.092 m., might be sculptural and so was sent to the museum. Several large pottery fragments were found including a large rim of a glaze bowl preserving 60% of the original circumference and a flat-bottomed jug found at N1076.81 E106.41 H85.44. A pottery waster was also removed in this context. Two large murex shells and eight sheep/goat jaw bones were found along with much other bone/shell. A coin (2014-104) was discovered in the dry sieve. Some glass and iron were also collected in this context.
After the removal of the first lens of fill in the pit we are able to see evidence of a possible destruction layer in the cut of this pit, context 255. Along the W edge of the cut we notice several tiles packed closely together with clay. There also seems to be a slope, or a slump, in the cut of the pit on its S side below the structure revealed just S of it. It is possible that this structure collapsed further after the pit was dug and after it fell out of use.
