Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   In the cleaning of context 4 we came down on a pit on the western side of the baulk. The edge around the pit was uniform and level with the more compact greyish brown dirt that lied under the top soil. The fill was softer than the surrounding, but composed, apparently, of the same greyish brown dirt. We excavated the pit to prepare for the removal of a the surrounding, more compact, soil, into which the pit was dug. The dirt was 100% sifted. Several substantial pieces of roof tiles were removed by hand, as well as an iron nail. The tiles were found about 0.30M down. The lower soil 0.3M down turned out to be an earlier deposit and pair of cuttings. Much of the material in the earlier deposit was excavated along with that of the later deposit. The large tiles were found approximately where the latter truncated the earlier deposit. Excavation was halted when the mistake was noticed, in order to preserve as much of the surviving fill from the lower deposit as possible.
