Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   In the removal of 253, another post hole was revealed. Like the others found in the corridor, the post hole was circular and marked by rocks sticking up in the surrounding surface. We originally thought we came to the bottom of the post hole when we hit some chunky tiles at the bottom, which were topped on the sides of the hole by two thin stones. We removed the tile and stones to reveal that the post hole actually went down further than the other two post holes to the W.
The post hold could have had two phases, the original being the bottom of the hole. The second phase might be when the builders installed a smaller post hole which necessitated shimming the hole to make it smaller in depth and width. Did the first post need to be replaced? Was the hole not the right size? It's still unclear what the post holes were holding up a shed roof? Scaffolding?
See note for Cut 333 for more on the relationships between the post holes in the corridor.
