Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context is a continuation of work conducted in Session II by Maggie Burr and Dylan Rogers. We began by taking off the second lens of the pit defined by cut 408 that abuts wall 156 in an effort to determine the nature of the relationship of this pit to wall 156. We proceeded from the E end of the pit toward the W end, coming down on the hard bottom of the pit at the E end first. We overdug the east and middle of this pit, but the western portion came down on to the floor of the pit, marked by flat-lying sherds and a smooth bottoming-out of the pit. Wth dry conditions on June 2nd and the passing of one week between excavation efforts, it was difficult to detect subtle changes in the soil. These changes were clearer in the rain on 3rd June, when we completed digging this context. We succeeded in coming down upon the foundation trench for wall 156. This foundation trench was packed with fill with inclusions, and sloped down to the north. In future excavations we will pursue the answer to the question of whether the foundation trench for wall 156 continued beneath the N-S trench that forms part of the western boundary for this context. In terms of human activity, there was definitely walking upon the surface of this pit context, leading to the surface's hard packing. Several coins were found in this context; hopefully these will help with dating.
Part of Frankish ribbed bottle fragment probably same as found in context 274. This pit appears to be the site of dumping for general waste and possibly cooking;dining waste.
Animal bones, 3.1 kg, saved in LOT 2014-45.
