Context:   55

Description:   The context shape in plan is circular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: Truncates 43, 64, 56, and 75..
Notes:   This cut was identified by the soft, clayey silt characterizing context 53. On the eastern side the edge is easily defined. On the north and west sides the cut truncates another deposit excavated as context 56. The bottom of the eastern half contains silty clay with few inclusions and is more compact than the soil above. The western half, however, contains clayey silt with significant inclusions of tile and rock and softer soil than the eastern half. The soil on the western half appears to be the same as that north and west of the cut. We think this cut truncated an earlier pit on the western half and so we stop excavating to investigate this earlier pit.
Later notes: After further excvaation we realized that cut 55 contained two fill levels: 53 and 76, the upper and lower levels respectively. It seems that the cut was originally made as a robbing trench, and that the two lenses were intentional leveling fill events Alternatively, the two lenses were intentional leveling fill after a robbing event. Judging from the pottery and small finds, it was the removal of the original material and not the deposits themselves that were the reason for the cut. This cut is differentiated from deposit 39 because context 53 (the fill for the earlier pit) was somewhat harder. But the fill of 39 was extremely loose and 53 was itself also very loose, so it seems that 39 was a robbing trench, and that it was dug because the soft earth of 53 was clearly a deposit.
