Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NE. The soil color is light brownish yellow. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   (KTT) After taking a second pass in context 697, we decided to change contexts for what appears to be the bottom of this layer, following the advice of Panos. This context 709 is equal to context 697. The yellow soil of contexts 697 and 709 diffuses into a redder and sandier soil iun the NW corner. The yellow layer becomes thicker and more distinct as we move SE. We have also turned up the redder sandy soil in the NE, though the yellow soil continues in the center of the area. I (KTT) think Panos troweled a bit more aggressively than necessary and took some of the red-sandy layer beneath 709 with it. Once the area has been shoveled and swept we should be able to get a better sense of how much was taken off the top of the next layer.
They have finished the pass. While the red-sandy layer has been revealed in some places, once we have finished shoveling we will need to sweep to see if we have removed all of the yellow soil in the center of the context, which was deeper than other parts.
Panos sees a reddish layer to the E (the red sandy soil) and a different "Mauro" layer in W (the yellow still lies over the center). We are agreed that only a bit of the yellow remains, but we will explre more to see if the mauro and red sandy layers are in fact different.

(KTT) After removing the backfill of Pit 1992-1, we will resume work on this context. The backfill of Pit 1992-1 was removed to avoid any contamination that might occur between the contexts, as we are not certain if the 1992-1 backfill was sifted before its deposition.
We are doing a sweep of the layer to again determine the limits of the yellow soil and those of the red-sandy soil and the Mauro soil.
Panos wished to change baskets before continuing. We have therefore closed this context and opened a new one: 721. Thus context 709 is equal to contexts 697 and 721 (709=697=721).
