Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This grave (1997-43) was the westernmost in a series of burials excavated from out of an E-W trench in Room 4/D (see NB 895: 172-5). This grave was one of 3 areas examined during initial cleaning this season (2015) in order to determine whether any graves in the room had been left unexcavated during the 1990s excavations in the area. It appears, however, that the skeletal remains had been almost completely removed during the previous excavations, leaving a small skim of material overlying the grave cut including the stones and tiles used to elevate and prop up the head of the deceased at time of burial. After cleaning this grave cut, then, work proceeded to a different area of the room, and the underlying strata remain unexcavated as of the end of the 2015 excavation season.
Some human skeletal material was retrieved from this activity, and it will be examined in reference to BL 1997-43 from the original excavation. The skeletal material from the hand in particular may represent metacarpals and phalanges that had fallen under the body during decomposition. It is also likely, however, that some material, especially pottery, etc., may have originated in the wider room and washed into the grave during the almost 20 years that this grave cut remained exposed.
