Name:   C 1940 429
Title:   MORTARIUM
Category Code:   C
Year:   1940
Object Number:   429
Description:   Flat bottom, slightly concave wall, deeply overhanging rim (resembling that of a fishplate). The spout is very deep and wide, but slightly flared and not completely level with the rim. The rim is wheelmade. Perhaps a variant of this type, suggestive of the sort of rim to appear in the Hellenistic rasied-lip form. Cf. Lot 1980-84:1.
Decoration:   Self-slipped on rim, outer wall, not well finished on exterior.
Material:   Small to large inclusions, mostly red, some gray, very fine to small red and gray grit.
Munsell Color:   Core 7.5YR 8/6-7/6; slightly lighter slip
Condition:   Missing parts. Six joining fragments preserve almost half of vessel, most of one handle, spout; center missing.
Chronology:   Last quarter of the 5th to the mid-3rd century.
